often raises many questions, particularly regarding the division of property, the family residence, children, and each partner\u2019s financial couples, common-law partners generally do not benefit from the same protections provided under the Civil Code of Qu\u00e9bec. As a general rule, separation does not result in an automatic division of property or entitlement to spousal support between former partners, and common-law partners are not subject to the family patrimony \u2014 a regime reserved for married couples, which is established upon marriage.<BR><BR>\n\nHowever, this does not mean that no rights exist. Property acquired jointly, such as a jointly owned residence, remains subject to the general rules of civil law and may be divided according to each person\u2019s ownership rights.
